Bootless in Alabama

I felt a little left out today. It was a rainy, stormy day in Alabama, and I didn’t have any rain boots.

It’s kinda funny because used to I never saw anybody wearing rain boots around here, and today it seems like every other female had on a pair.

They were in all different patterns: flowers, plaid, polka dots, but best of all–

Houndstooth.

And that, my friends, may just convince me to buy a pair for myself.

The Morning After

Football Christmas has come and gone, and the Alabama faithful did not get the present we wanted. Amazingly enough, though, the sun did come up this morning and life will go on.

Thousands, probably millions of words will be written and spoken about the Alabama-LSU game. I haven’t read or heard any of them yet this morning, but I’m guessing I’ll read or hear the following:

  • Alabama needs to improve their kicking game or get another kicker.
  • Alabama needs to improve their passing game.
  • Somebody needs to find out why one particular dirty player wasn’t ejected from the game.
  • Somebody needs to find out why the catch at the goal line was ruled an interception.

When it’s all said and done, it is just a game, but last night’s game was certainly an intense one.

As for the Christmas analogy, I guess it falls apart in the end because we can’t take this present back and get the one we want.

It’s Christmas morning here in Alabama if you are an Alabama fan. The anticipation is almost over, the waiting almost done. Many of the faithful are on their way to the stadium to join the throngs already there.

In some ways, today is much like the beginning of the season that I wrote about here except that today, only two teams are filled with fist-pumping excitement instead of the whole nation of college football.

Today, only one team has the hope of becoming #1.

Today, only one team has the hope of staying #1.

Today, only one player has the hope of sealing his bid for the Heisman Trophy.

All day long the anticipation will build, with the final present being unwrapped this evening at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa as the nation watches.

I think Bear Bryant may take a peek, too.

College Football: The Day After

After 11 + hours of college football yesterday, I thought I’d muse a bit on the events of the day.

ROLL TIDE!

First and foremost, ROLL TIDE! I know, it was just Kent State, but after the debacle against Louisiana-Monroe in 2007, I’ve learned not to assume any ball game as a sure win. And kudos to Kent State for coming earlier this year to help with the tornado cleanup. That right there’s a class act.

As for assumptions, I guess Auburn, the second luckiest team next to LSU, knows after yesterday that a team like Utah State has to be taken seriously. When the players show up to play, any team is a contender.

LSU catches more breaks than should be allowed. When Auburn plays LSU October 22nd at LSU, it will be interesting to see whose luck runs out first. I’m really surprised that Oregon didn’t beat LSU, given the distraction of the Ducks’ awful looking dark uniforms with the neon shoes. Mercy!

Speaking of uniforms, I guess Georgia lost because of their dog-ugly uniforms. Good grief. Who on earth thought those things were a good idea? Maybe the only thing worse was Boise State’s blinding shoes. Between the two teams’ hideous clothing displays, I’m shocked that either team could concentrate on the game.

Florida State, Arkansas, and others got to enjoy the season opening rout they were expecting. Good for them.

As for next week, who knows? As long as Alabama beats Penn State, the sun will continue to shine.

College Football First Saturday Anticipation

Right now, even Nick is smiling. (Image via Wikipedia)

I love this first morning of college football because every team has a clean slate. Every team is a winner.

Optimism is running high with the anticipation of an undefeated season stretching ahead.

Right now, every team has the potential to be #1.

Emotions are running high–in a positive way.

The fans are tailgating.

The players are pumped up.

The cheerleaders are smiling.

Stomachs have butterflies.

All is well with the football world until kickoff. Then, the tide will turn for one team or the other.

Touchdowns will be scored.

Field goals or extra points will be missed.

Fans will cheer.

Coaches will cuss.

Bands will play.

Tim Tebow will cry. Oops, sorry–just a little reminiscing of the Alabama Crimson Tide win over the Gators.

But really, for all but the few who played the last couple of days, today is still filled with hopeful anticipation, joy, excitement, and suspense.

For those whose games are over, they are either ecstatically joyful or dejectedly defeated with the most notable example being TCU with their two-point loss to Baylor after being 24 points ahead. The back and forth of that game resulting in a whopping 98 points being scored exemplifies the awesome excitement that is college football.

With that as the opener, the 2011 season of college football is underway.

ROLL TIDE! (Just had to throw that in.)
