Discontent, or What’s Wrong with Being What We Are?

One of life’s perplexities to me is that we are never content with what we are. I really don’t get that.

Think about it. Who do you know who loves themselves just the way they are? Here are a few observations.

If you are skinny, you want to be fatter, curvier, or plumper.

If you are skinny, you don’t think you are skinny enough.

If you are fat, you want to be skinner. Always.

If you are normal sized, you want to be skinner. Please.

If you have straight hair, you want curly hair.

If you have beautiful, naturally curly hair, you want stick-straight hair.

If you are old, you want to be young.

If you are young, you want to grow up.

If you aren’t married, you want to be married.

Hopefully, if you are married, you don’t want to be single.

If you are tall, you want to be shorter.

If you are short, you want to be tall.

If you’re unknown, you want to be famous.

If you are famous, you want anonymity.

If you have dark hair, you want light hair.

If you have light hair, you want dark hair.

If you are in school, you want to be out of school.

If you are out of school, you are probably happy about that. ๐Ÿ™‚

If you are raising kids, you want them to be older.

If your kids are grown, you wish they were still small.

If you have a small house, you want a big house.

If you have a big house, you want to downsize.

If you are at the beach, you want to be in the mountains.

If you are in the mountains, the beach is calling your name.

Kenny Chesney’s song Round and Round sums it up pretty well.

Some folks livin’ in the country can’t wait to get in their pickup trucks and go to town
There’s people livin’ in a penthouse dying to get out in the sticks and ride around
There’s a man up on a mountain top who wants to go down and breathe the salt air by the shore
There’s a guy on an island he ain’t smilin’ and don’t want to be on an island anymore
There’s a lady locked in a love affair wouldn’t care if she was single again
There’s a lonely soul who’s only goal is to get that golden ring upon their hand
In the middle of nowhere there’s a nobody tryin’ to get that 15 minutes of fame
Someplace there’s a superstar thinkin’ Lord if I could only change my name

Round and round and round and round we go
Why we can’t be satisfied I don’t know

I don’t know….

There’s a young man wishin’ he could grab the hands of a time and speed em’ up a year or two
There’s and old man wishin’ he could just go back and stop the clock and hang on to his youth
There’s a stoner on the sidewalk wishin’ he could just get straight for a day
There’s a man in a suit and tie thinkin’ gettin’ high might be a better way

Round and round and round and round we go
Why we can’t be satisfied I don’t know

From the day we’re born it seems like it never stops
Why do we always want somethin’ we ain’t got

Oh we ain’t got…

Round and round and round and round we go
Why we can’t be satisfied I don’t know

Til the day we die seems like it never stops
Why we always wantin’ somethin’ we ain’t got

Oh we ain’t got…

Round and round and round and round we go
Round and round and round and round we go
Round and round and round and round we go
Round and round and round and round we go
